Storm damage roof repair in Fayetteville, after the wind and the pines
When a storm passes through Cumberland County, the damage comes in three shapes: shingles lifted or torn off by wind, limbs dropped by the pines, and water driven in sideways. We document it for the adjuster, dry the house in, and then repair it properly.
Fayetteville gets storms from two directions. Inland thunderstorms roll through from spring into fall with straight-line wind gusts and sometimes hail. And in some years a hurricane's remains come up from the coast: Fran in 1996 brought gusts up to 79 mph to Fayetteville, Matthew in October 2016 dropped fourteen inches of rain one day and eight the next, and Florence in 2018 pushed the Cape Fear River close to 61.5 feet. On April 16, 2011, a tornado cut across northwest Fayetteville, with EF3 damage between Yadkin Road and the Fort Bragg entrance and about 150 homes destroyed.
Most storm damage we see is less dramatic than that and easier to miss. Wind breaks the adhesive seal under a shingle tab, the tab lifts and creases, and the roof looks fine from the yard. Two storms later, the tab is gone and the nail line is exposed. Pine limbs puncture decking or crack shingles where they land. Wind-driven rain gets pushed under flashing that would stay dry in a normal shower. We walk the whole roof, gently test tabs for broken seals, check the attic for new water, and photograph everything with a scale reference.
If the house is open to the weather, the first job is drying it in: a tarp battened over the damage (see emergency tarping) so you aren't fighting the next rain. Then you get a written scope, photos and measurements. If you are filing a claim, that scope gives you something to set next to the adjuster's. We don't act as your adjuster and we don't waive deductibles; the claim is between you and your insurer, and we stick to the roof. See insurance claim help.
Be careful with anyone who shows up at the door the morning after a storm asking you to sign. North Carolina law gives you three business days to cancel a contract signed at your home, and since October 1, 2024, most residential roof contracts must also give you five business days to cancel after an insurance claim is denied, with no work and no payment in that window except emergency work to stop further damage. Read before you sign, and ask for the insurance certificate.

On the job

Storm damage: what people ask us
How do I know if the storm damaged my roof?
Look for shingles or pieces of shingle in the yard, granules washed out of the downspouts, dented gutters and vents, and new stains inside. Most wind damage can't be seen from the ground, so a free check is worth it after any storm with strong gusts.
Should I call my insurance company first?
You can call either one first. Many people have us check the roof so they know whether there is damage worth a claim before they file one. If water is coming in, call us first so we can stop it.
A company knocked on my door after the storm. Is that normal?
It happens after every big storm. You have three business days to cancel a contract signed at your home, and five business days after a claim denial for a roof contract. Ask for proof of insurance and a written scope before signing anything.
Can a limb on the roof wait?
If it hasn't broken through, it can wait for daylight. Don't climb up to move it. If it has punctured the roof or water is coming in, call and we will tarp it as soon as it is safe.
Will you meet the adjuster?
Yes, if you want us there. We bring our photos and measurements and point out what we found. The decisions on the claim are between you and your insurer.
How fast can you repair it?
Small repairs often happen within days. After a widespread storm, materials and scheduling get tight, so we dry the house in first and give you a date.
