The place was called Lucknow until 1873, when it took the name of railroad builder Bennett Dunn, and it was incorporated on February 12, 1887. The Dunn Commercial Historic District and the General William C. Lee House are on the National Register, and the Battle of Averasborough was fought nearby in 1865. The 2020 census counted 8,446 people.
Dunn also knows what a bad storm day looks like. In the April 16, 2011 outbreak, the tornado that tore through northwest Fayetteville kept going as a wedge, producing EF2 damage along I-95 through Dunn, where a mobile home park was destroyed and one person was killed. Days like that are rare. Far more often we see the slow kind of storm damage: tabs lifted and creased, a ridge cap gone at one end, a limb that punched a hole in the decking.
If water is coming in now: move what you can, set a bucket under the drip, and call. We tarp open roofs with wood battens screwed through the tarp edges, which holds far better than sandbags. More on emergency tarping.
Once the house is dry, we inspect the full roof and the attic, photograph what we find and write a repair or replacement price. Older homes near downtown often carry more than one layer, chimneys that need new flashing and valleys that have been patched before; each item is priced on its own line so you can see where the money goes. If you file an insurance claim, the same photos and scope go to your adjuster.
How we help Dunn roofs
Tarping that holds
Battens screwed along the tarp edges, not sandbags or nails through bare plastic.
Historic-district homes
Chimney flashing, valleys and old layers checked closely on the older houses downtown.
Wind damage
Creased and lifted tabs found by hand, then resealed or replaced.
Limb strikes
Damaged decking cut out and replaced before new shingles go down.
Claim paperwork
Photos and a written scope for your adjuster, with the decision left to the insurer.
Five-day cancel window
After a denied insurance claim, state law gives you five business days to cancel a residential roof contract, and our contract says so.

What Dunn homeowners ask us
How far out is Dunn?
About 25 miles northeast of Fayetteville, and part of our regular area.
Can you tarp a roof at night?
If it is safe to be on the roof, yes. In lightning or high wind we wait, and we tell you how to protect the inside until we can get up there.
My older house has two layers. Can you add a third?
We don't recommend it. A third layer adds weight, hides the decking and can cause trouble with VA or FHA loans when you sell.
Will insurance pay for my storm damage?
That depends on your policy and the adjuster. We document what is there and give you a written scope; the coverage decision is the insurer's.
Do you replace chimney flashing?
Yes. New step and counter-flashing goes into the mortar joints instead of relying on caulk.
Do you handle commercial buildings downtown?
We work on low-slope and flat roofs too. See flat and TPO roofs for what that involves.
