The town's name joins two founders, John McRae and A.A. Williford. The Hoke County Courthouse and the Raeford Historic District are both on the National Register, and the 2020 count put the city at 4,559 people.
On April 16, 2011, a tornado formed about six miles northeast of Raeford and tracked into Cumberland County. By the time it reached northwest Fayetteville it was doing EF3 damage between Yadkin Road and the Fort Bragg entrance, and about 150 houses there were destroyed. Most of the damage that brings us to Hoke County is smaller and easier to miss: a few shingles creased by a gust, a ridge cap lifted at one end, a pine limb that dented a gutter and cracked a tab on the way down.
Those small things matter because they let water in slowly. A creased shingle has lost its seal, and the next wind-driven rain slips under it. We walk the whole roof, check the attic for damp decking, and tell you which items are worth fixing now. When a roof is past saving, we price the replacement with the decking allowance written in, so nothing jumps when the old shingles come off.
After a big storm, photograph the roof and yard from the ground before cleanup, then call. The storm damage page lists what to keep for an insurance claim.
How we help Raeford roofs
County roads covered
From the courthouse square out to homes on Hoke County's back roads.
Crease and seal checks
Wind-creased shingles have lost their seal; we find them by hand, slope by slope.
Decking allowance in writing
Replacement prices state up front what a sheet of rotten decking costs, so the total holds.
Older homes downtown
Houses near the historic district get a close look at chimneys, step flashing and any older layers underneath.
Duty-day scheduling
If someone in the house works on Fort Bragg, we plan visits around duty days when we can.
Local office first
Before structural work, we contact the county or city office that covers the address.

What Raeford homeowners ask us
Do you really come out to Raeford?
Yes. It is about 20 miles west of Fayetteville and part of our regular area, along with the rest of Hoke County.
A storm passed and I can't see any damage. Should I still have it checked?
If the wind was strong or hail fell, yes. Creased shingles and bruised granules are hard to spot from the ground, and they are the ones that leak later.
Is a permit needed for roof work in Hoke County?
A like-for-like roof under the state's $40,000 line often doesn't need one; structural repairs do. The county or the city has the final word, and we call them first.
Can you replace only the damaged section?
Often, if the rest of the roof is sound and we can match the shingle reasonably well. We will tell you when a patch would look or perform poorly.
Do you work on the older houses near the courthouse?
Yes. On older roofs we pay extra attention to chimney flashing, valleys and whatever is under the top layer.
How long does a replacement take?
It depends on size, pitch and weather. The written price tells you how many working days to expect.
