Hail damage roof repair in Fayetteville, hit by hit
Hail damage hides. From the driveway the roof looks the same as it did yesterday. Up close there are dark bruises where granules were knocked loose and the mat underneath is cracked. We find every hit, circle it, photograph it and tell you what it means.
Hail is now among the costliest weather threats in the Carolinas, rivaling hurricanes. Spring and summer thunderstorms around Fayetteville can drop stones from marble size to golf ball size, and they don't need to be huge to do damage. In late June 2023, a report logged with the National Weather Service put quarter-size hail about eight miles from the city just before midnight.
What hail does to an asphalt shingle is specific. A stone hits, knocks the protective granules off in a round spot, and can fracture the fiberglass mat underneath. The spot looks dark and feels soft, like a bruise on fruit. The shingle doesn't leak that day. But with the granules gone, sun and heat break down the asphalt at that spot faster, and the fracture spreads. The Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety has found that a roof which has already taken hail is far more likely to have a claim from the next hail event.
Our hail check starts on the ground: dents in the gutters, downspouts, window screens, AC fins and the soft metal of vent caps show the size and direction of the hail. On the roof we go slope by slope, circle each hit in chalk and photograph it next to a scale, and count hits in test squares, a method many adjusters use. We also check skylights, ridge vents and flashing, which crack and dent too.
Then you get a straight answer. A few scattered hits on a young roof may be a repair or nothing worth a claim. Heavy, consistent bruising across a slope usually means replacement, and it's the kind of loss homeowners insurance is meant for. We give you the photos either way and let you decide whether to call your insurer. For claim steps and North Carolina's five-business-day cancellation rule, see hail claims in North Carolina.
What the job covers
Ground check
Gutters, downspouts, screens, AC fins and vent caps read for hail size and the direction the storm came from.
Every hit chalked
Each bruise circled, photographed with a scale and logged by slope, so nothing depends on memory.
Test squares
Hits counted inside marked squares on each slope, a common way adjusters measure hail damage.
Soft metals and skylights
Dented flashing, cracked skylight domes and crushed ridge vents noted along with the shingles.
Honest read
A few hits on a sound roof are called a few hits. A roof that needs replacing is called that, with the photos.
Ready for the adjuster
Photo set and written scope you can hand to your insurer, and we can be there when the adjuster inspects.

Hail damage: what people ask us
How soon after a hailstorm should I get the roof checked?
Within a few weeks is sensible. Bruises are easiest to see while fresh, and most policies expect claims to be reported promptly. Check your own policy for its time limit.
The hail was small. Could it still damage my roof?
Yes. Older shingles that have lost some granules already, and roofs hit by hail before, are more vulnerable. Dents in your gutters or AC unit are a good sign there's something worth checking.
Will a hail claim raise my premium?
That depends on your insurer and policy. Ask your agent. We can show you the photos first so you can decide whether the damage is worth a claim.
Can you just fix the hits?
On a newer roof with a handful of hits, sometimes. On a roof with consistent bruising across a slope, replacing the individual shingles would mean replacing most of the slope anyway.
Do you work with the insurance company?
We provide photos, measurements and a scope, and meet the adjuster if you want us there. We don't negotiate your claim for you; that is your insurer and you, or a licensed public adjuster if you hire one.
Is metal roofing better against hail?
Metal doesn't crack or lose granules, but large hail can dent some panels. See the metal or shingles comparison.
